I've performed at farmers markets, restaurants and more. I did actually perform on the street, though. I was invited by the city for a sponsored art walk. I set up with just an acoustic guitar and someone came by wondering where to put the money. With no tip jar I just opened my closed guitar case for him. I played for a couple of hours and netted about $10. One nice person left a 5 dollar bill.
When I played for a country band at a major country club in Seattle, I was playing bass at the time. I used to play bass with these really thick heavy picks. Breaking a string for a guitar player is embarassing enough, but as a bass player, you only have 4 of them. Bass players shouldn't break strings on stage, but because of my style it did happen to me with a big pop, and then no where to go without the misssing string.
I had a Takamine 12 String guitar for a while. I played it until their were big gouges in the fingerboard. I had the frets repaired on it once and kept it going for a while. Eventually it just wasn't playable anymore and I sold it along with another guitar I had.
