Fun Stuff about the Artist

Life on the Street

I haven't busked that often, but when I was about 22 years old I was playing on a corner in Harvard Square when someone paid me to stop singing a John Denver song.

Embarrassing Moment

My most embarrassing moment live on stage in front of hundreds was getting tangled in my guitar cord so badly while I was introducing a song that the bass player had to step forward to untangle me. This was in July 1981 and the video is up on youtube and miraculously edits out that moment. If you look carefully you can see the edit cut. I was doing a song I wrote after John Lennon was killed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvUCMiTZtZ4

And speaking of my musical idol John Lennon, I was fortunate enough to meet him 3 times, but the last time was an embarrassing moment. I called him a great guy and he said "Thank you" but then I called him a genius & added "but you know that already." He gave me his piercing John Lennon stare before he moved on to the next fan. He knew I was just a gawking 14 year old, so I am sure he forgave me, but it was still an embarrassing moment. (He was sensitive being called a genius 'cause a parody song was out at the time where he called himself a genius)

My Instrument

My first guitar had three strings. My friend Neil Davis who watched too many cartoons hit me over the head with it yelling "El Kabong" and cracked it. I also got a bump on my head. He never apologized and only said to me that I had a hard head. He was clearly disappointed the guitar did not break apart.

My favorite guitar was a beautiful Guild acoustic that inexplicably committed suicide at the end of a gig at the Mermaid Inn circa 1993. It was sitting on a guitar stand with no one around and fell face down and cracked off the neck so badly it could not be repaired.

I do not name my instruments. I do not know why. Perhaps I am strange.
