More About jkneejanuary

Hi, my name is J-kNee, and I grew up in the Rt 2 area of unincorporated Faulkner County, Arkansas. Burning trash, eating squirrel, and catching snakes filled my days until I got my first guitar at age 12. Many years I spent playing alone. When I did interact with people, I often embarrassed myself, so I indulged in self-medication. At age 18, I fell seriously ill and spent a few weeks in the hospital. After my release, I experienced a strange vision that showed me that I would meet some people who would point me in the right direction. Six months later, I met a band from Tacoma who suggested I move to the NW. And I did. A month after turning 20, I took a one way bus to the PacNW which, by the way, took four days! Since the move, I've written over 50 songs, studied/taught music and creative writing, released 2 EPs and 1 LP, been in several bands, and volunteered regularly w/ local youth. Currently I am in the The Januariez, The Black Tones, Saucebox, and BUST. Thanks for stopping by!

Fun Stuff about the Artist

Life on the Street

I was performing at the River Market in Little Rock, AR, and some weird business guys came up to me and tipped me and then asked me to come to their hotel room to perform later that evening. I declined. And a few minutes after shoeing those guys away, another busker came up to me, complimented me, and then told me that he comes out here everyday to make money to support his family. I felt bad and didn't return.

Embarrassing Moment

I think I ripped my pants on stage once. I know I've peed my pants before. And there have been many times where I have simply trusted the wrong people to perform with. I think I would have to just highlight the most embarrassing timeline, which was when I used to drink all the time and I was desperate to have people to play with. It's just doesn't do the show any good, and it's a great way to incriminate yourself without remembering! Nothing like therapy to help process these moments!

My Instrument

My guitar's headstock reads Stinger SSL-20, but I had it customized a few years ago after it sat around my house gutted and in pieces. See the guitar has been stolen TWICE by 2 different ex-boyfriends. The last theft left the guitar without some fine tuners and tuning pegs. The pick guard was hanging from a wire that was attached to a rusty pot. After years of ignoring it, I decided I was gonna have it customized for me. I was gonna have a guitar no one else has. And so there it is! The story behind my electric that has no real name... maybe I should call it something.
