More About Darius

Darius Clynes has composed and perfomed since 1967 in various styles. Starting as a classically trained pianist, he experimented with electronic music in the 60s and 70s. Early experiments with computer music yielded the computer synthesized singing voice piece called I Am Not a Computer 1976 realized at Columbia University. As a pianist and on an instrument called the amplified table clavichord he has frequently played on the streets, in restaurants, and small cafes. As a founder of the Darius Clynes Quartet his compositions have been performed in Brussels cafes like the Archiduc in Belgium.
Fun Stuff about the Artist

Life on the Street

I used to perform on the street with a Robert Morley table model clavichord (using a modified cassette preamplifier in continuous record mode) .

I was performing on the street in San Francisco in the early seventies and a man told me he killed somebody. I was playing at the time, and didnt notice what he said. The cassette happened to have been running. Later, on listening to the playback, I heard him saying that, and he sounded remorseful, like it was an accident. Never saw him again.

My Instrument

I once spent several months building a Zuckerman Clavichord. I put steel strings on it so I could use a magnetic pickup to amplify it. I loved it. It took me about 6 months to complete, and then one day it was stolen.

I would of course recognize it immediately if I saw it again.
