Aged about 22 I travelled around playing Horn each day to earn enough to eat and get somewehere to stay.. I ended up in Florence. It was an incredible time. I met many people and had amazing adventures such as being invited to jam with other bands, to a party (where I met a Swiss friend who I've known ever since),
I was once playing in a big band for a tour of the UK with the famous (in certain circles) American crooner "Vic Damone". The first gig we played he started introducing the band one by one.. but I was playing horn sitting on the end of the trombone section. He seemed to have forgotten me as the trombones were introduced and the trumpets and so on.. It had never occurred to me he'd saved me for the end! when he introduced me he "bigged me up" - all because I'm a novelty, practically the only female in an all male band - and had me standing up blushing wildly whilst he said things like "I'd never thought of kissing a french horn player before".. I was mortified ( I was about 18 at the time, and had no idea how to handle it.. and anyway he was a big star type of personality, we didn't actually get to speak to him). When I sat down my heart was racing.. and I had to pull myself together in order to play the solo in my next number.. After that I dreaded going onstage.
My most recent purchase was a beautiful vintage King horn..and that pretty much got me back into doing brass seriously again.. Over the last year, because I'm trying to work as a composer, I have been collecting instruments to use in recordings etc. I also bought an Olds trombone, a Cajon, and was given an electric guitar and a nice Ukelele (presents from my husband)
I already had a keyboard, and various trumpets, melodicas etc. My most recent instrument is the (electro acoustic) bass guitar that I borrowed..
