Why the saxophone of all instruments? Well, to be honest, I just picked it for 6th grade band because I thought it was cool. But now, I've been playing the sax for almost 10 years, and still have a lot of fun with it.
Why am I on this website? Well, being a musician isn't easy. Especially a musician in college. And around here, there are SO MANY other saxophonists, that it's hard to find gigs. I came across this website and figured, "Why not? It'll give me more of a chance to perform for people."
So, here I am!
A wild story? How about an "I almost got shot!" story?
So I was visiting my hometown, Memphis TN, and I was finishing up a performance on Beale. So, it's Friday night on Beale Street. The road is obviously very crowded. So, naturally, people are going to accidentally brush against each other. Well, there was this one woman in very revealing clothing, and a very tall, burly man walking beside her. I accidentally brushed up against the woman's shoulder, and she mumbled something to the man. I hear the burly man shout, "Are you touching my ho, bitch?" ...Yeah, it turned out this guy was a pimp. At the risk of getting capped, I pretended I didn't hear him and kept walking. He kept shouting at me, but the road was too crowded for him to chase after me. After about a minute, he gave up coming after me and walked off. After I was off Beale Street, I couldn't help but heep thinking to myself, "Holy shit, that just happened!"
My most embarrassing moment would have to be during a performance at MTSU my freshman year of college. It was a jazz ensemble concert, and I was really hyped about it. I was selected to play a solo during one of the songs. Now, at the time, I was just getting the hang of theoretical improvisation, as opposed to just playing whatever I feel like. So, I was thinking really hard about what I was playing... REALLY hard.... When I looked at the playback video, I looked pretty stupid. My cross-eyed eyes were looking up, I was wavering back and forth...
I looked like a zombie who needed to pee really badly. And this video was recorded by the university, so all of MTSU got to see me look like a jackass up on stage...
Fun times!
The only saxophone in good condition that I actually own is my Cannonball Big Bell Series Tenor Sax. I've had it since I was 16. It's a good horn, if not a little hard to keep in tune. But the sound quality is great for classical or jazz, and it doesn't have a scratch on it.
Because I've had it so long, and playing with it has brought me some of the coolest moments of my life, I've dubbed it, "Ol' Glory."
You might occasionally see me playing on an alto saxophone. Unless I'm lucky enough to have been able to buy one for myself, it's a Selmer Super Action 80 that I'm borrowing from MTSU. It's a good horn too, but it needs a couple of repairs. (What's taking the school so long?)
As for my other instruments, my guitar is a Fender Strat, my trumpet (cornet) is a King, and my keyboard is a cheap piece of crap.
