When asked what his influences are, Shango gives a chuckle and says, “Man….EVERYTHING. When I was growing up, there were a lot of different types of people around us all the time, Mexicans, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Haitians, Jamaicans, from my Daddy’s business. So I was influenced by all of their music, reggae, dancehall, tejano, merengue, bachata, all of that. I think the craziest moment I had while performing in the streets was when I actually met and later got to open for Gyptian while he was here in Hawaii. I was cruising in Waikiki with some friends, and we started up a cypher. I was just doing something over the beat that was playing and this guy walks up and, in a heavy Jamaican accent, said, "Come ah mi session at Crown tonight" When I turned around I was like, "OH SNAP IT'S GYPTIAN!" Funnier thing is I was already set to be one of the opening acts at The Crown (it's closed down now), but to have an official nod from the guy everybody was comin' to see was awesome!
