I was asked to play a few tunes at the rehab center where my brother was being cared for (his cancer).
After the performance, the guitarist who invited me up to the stage asked me had I studied with So and So....................I couldnt believe he had known who my teacher was.........I was blown away...........I asked... "How the hell did you know?"
He said there were very few players that knew the fretboard as well as I did........I thought that this guy was joking, but the complement felt good anyway..........
I never had a real bad one......I always prepared and rehearsed my tunes where I could play them even if the lights went out...........If you study your part, you can always fall back on it even if you lose your groove or creativity during a set
I still have it but it is fragile and I only keep it for studio work.
it is a 1964 Rickenbacker 450 combo.........the frets are worn pretty low
but that gives you some great agogic afftects along the fretboard.........It has a tough
bite to it that just makes it get through the mix without upstaging other players.
I can send you a picture of it if you ask me for it.....I read stories about its popularity during the Beatles era and that John Lenon was looking for one but couldnt find one....It just looks tough as opposed to the three pickup "tulip" styled rickies........
