The only time I ever performed in the streets was when I was fifteen and I was at the mall but I had no bus money to get home. I ended up offering to sing people a song for whatever spare change they had. Only one person gave me something after the songs, it was a girl my age and she gave me a whole dollar which was enough to get home. Some people in this world are silent heroes who are not forgotten.
I used to play open mic sessions at a local coffee shop in my area. One night I drank a few too many (but not too many) and tried to perform an acoustic version of DMX's X gon' give it to ya'. I invited my buddy on stage to be my "hype man" but he got so nervous that he ended up accidentally spitting in my eyes 45 seconds into the song. It stung... but not only that, I was already screwing up the chords and forgetting the words. The host stopped us and got us off stage during an open mic where usually you can do whatever you want even if it's bad. I feel so much shame everytime I think of that.
My first instrument was the flute. I loved playing that thing until I was severely made fun of for being: 1. The only guy at my school playing the flute and 2. A guy... playing a flute. My younger self-conscious self said "F*** the flute I'm done." It wasn't until 7 years later when I got my first guitar (which is the one i currently use) before I decided to pursue music again.
