I have played in concert halls for large crowds, for one to a few, on streets & beaches, on mountains, in church’s, bars, on a sternwheeler, to weather the changing times in the street. Challenges come to me with each step I take. I know my abilities & limits. During one Christmas season I was hired to perform at our Town Center Mall at Showcase West Virginia. The plan was to video record the performance, broadcast the video and release a CD Jazz Finger Style Christmas Guitar. As I played a woman approached, took out her cell phone called someone. I heard her say, “you’ll never guess who is playing here”, as she walks up on the stage standing beside me holds the phone up to my ear to talk to her husband. Everyone Laughed! I kept playing, said hello, told him I was in the middle of a concert, gave her a hug & kept playing. The crowd cheered & waved as she left. I have stories about each band, the life altering places & people I met on the roads of my journey to get here.
I was playing for people in a Coliseum & Convention Center on the main stage. I got my feet tangled in a cable moving from the front mic playing guitar & singing over to a side to play organ when I started to trip, falling with my guitar striking & hitting the drummers ride cymbal on his drum platform. The cymbal fell & cut me, then blood was spurting out all over me & my guitar. Humbled as I landed on my knees. Embarrassed I got a up to play the organ, as I pressed a cloth into the wounded hand. At the end of the song I said, “Pride go’s before destruction & a haughty spirit before a fall. Now that the comedy portion of our show is over we’ll do this next song.” People thought it was all part of the show. We often got other jobs from people who saw one of my most embarrassing funny moments. There are as many funny & embarrassing moments as there are lessons & successes in my shows. I will have new ones sometimes & together we will share them
No internet or smart phones. They didn’t exist yet. In grade school I was obsessed with guitars & songwriting. I had this almost unplayable guitar with strings up so high & no way to adjust it, more like a toy with a cowboy painted on it, but that was all I had. I was 11 & I prayed for a guitar I saw in a store window that I could play. Impossible? Nevertheless, with faith I started to work for others cutting grass, clearing snow, cleaning garages, & saving money I earned. It took over a year to buy my first playable acoustic guitar. I would walk down & press my nose against the music store window every Friday to look at her. It took my faith, believing God, patience & a long time for a little boy to save up $50 back then. I finally got her & it meant more to me, because I knew God provided it. “HARMONY” was the brand so that was her name, & my prayers were answered. I name each guitar, related to her appearance, a person, place, or my guitar safari to hunt, find & get her.
