Hi there! My name is Eyvindur Karlsson (or Eyvi for short). I’m an Icelandic singer-songwriter who loves singing about the diamonds hiding in the mud – the beauty hiding among the sad and low down. I write good, honest Americana and folk music in the vein of Tom Waits and Nick Cave, and I like to tell sad stories, mixed with a good dose of humor, that can really cheer you up, perfect for those stormy nights when you just want to sit by a fireplace, book in hand, listening to the crackling of the logs mixed with the crackle of the vinyl record, sipping tea (or something stronger, perhaps) and listening to the wind in the eaves.
And if you are looking for that kind of comfort food for the ears, my music is going to dramatically enhance your life.
I sometimes play with a dear friend, who is a fantastic guitar player, but he's extremely clumsy. At one point we were playing (as the duet Misery Loves Company) in our favorite bar, and we were really getting into it. During one of the songs he burst into a rock hero guitar solo (which was funny, since we were doing a mostly acoustic set), and he jumped up on the table closest to the low-rise stage (which happened to be empty). He finished his solo there, and then proceeded to climb down onto a chair to get back onto the tiny stage. He put his foot down in the wrong place on the chair, though, and it slid from under him, and he tumbled, ass over head, and landed with his back on the edge of the stage. I was terrified that he had broken his back, but it was my turn to sing, so I just kept going with the next verse. Thankfully, he wasn't seriously hurt, and he got up and we finished the song, and the show. It was terrifying, but afterwards it was one of the funniest things ever.
I don't embarrass easily, but a slightly embarrassing moment was when I was singing on stage after a hard night's drinking the night before, and my voice was even worse than usual. No matter, I thought - I growl a lot anyway. As I came to a rather high pitched chorus in one of the songs, though, my voice turned into a squeak. We had to abandon that song, that night and for the rest of the tour we had just started.
I recently got a piano, that's got to be my favorite instrument at the moment. It's horribly out of tune (haven't gotten around to getting it tuned yet), but it's wonderful. It's probably 60 years old, or so, scratched up and worn, and getting it up the stairs to my apartment was horribly difficult, since it's extremely heavy, but it was worth it.
I also love my Autoharp, even though I really don't use it enough.
And then of course my trusty Seagull acoustic guitar. That thing just gets me, and never lets me down.
