Fun Stuff about the Artist

Life on the Street

Busking & performing on the street is truly an adventure . . . you just Never know! You learn quickly that's why they call it street smarts. Don't try to play at Venice Beach after the Sun goes down, but do Play @ the Third Street Promenade if you get wind they are planning to film on location . . . you can get paid a premium to not play a note!
Thru trial and error you can learn to read the passersby & build your repertoire to quickly play that perfect tune to match the personalities. You know when you have reached them when they reach into their pocket . . . and sometimes it's just enough to touch their soul when it shines through a smile or is reflected in a tear.
I've played for countless souls and love ever minute of it. I've had the privilege of playing for man's final wish at his mortal end, and for final wishes after a woman passed at her funeral. Playing music that is requested is very gratifying for me and the memories carry me as I search for the next soulful mile post.

Embarrassing Moment

I remember a graduation party event that I was hired to perform in Calabasas California and I showed up, rang the doorbell. An older distinguished white gentleman answered the door and I greeted him with a, "Hello I'm your steel drummer!"
And his immediate response was an astonished . . . " Well, you're not black!"
Without skipping a beat I responded, "Well I won't tell if you won't!"
It was an awkward exchange, but he reluctantly let me in and led me to the backyard where I was to perform for a BBQ. It only took a couple of notes of performing and he was smiling and enjoying the party. Shortly thereafter I was invited to take a break and eat, I wound up sharing BBQ ribs with Ray Parker Jr (Ghost Busters) who was a guest at the party and we all shared a good laugh over the incident.

My Instrument

My steel drums amaze & fascinate me everyday. Crafted by hand with a sledge hammer from a discarded 55 gal oil barrel from Trinidad, the southernmost island in the West Indies. It's sound is so distinct and mesmerizing, instantly capable of carrying you away to an island state of mind no matter what you play on it.
I have discovered that the frequency and tonal range is beyond soothing, it is healing. I have an artificial hip & extending physical ailments from a farm accident at the age of 14. However, when I play steel drums for hours at a time & feel no pain, it's a nirvanas bliss.
I have learned that as long as I keep playing my steel drums at a party or event - a spell seems to transfix my audience & they relax & enjoy, losing all track of time. . . a mini vacation in their minds and lives. It truly is happiest sound & I may never know completely why, but I am content to play all day . . . every day until it is revealed to me some way! What can I play for you today?
