My musical career started at age 14 playing rhythm guitar in a surf band in Newport Beach,CA. We called ourselves the Golden Ones. We were the opening band for Dick Dale and the Del-Tones at the Rendevouz Ballroom. I had left home at age 12 and was living in the back room of a Pool Hall called the Golden Cue, hence our name. At age 15 I moved into the back patio of the famous coffeehouse in west LA named the Ashgrove. I slept on a hammock in the back patio and worked as a busboy/dishwasher for room and board and a few dollars. The Ashgrove had the best folk, blues and bluegrass live entertainment in LA. I benefited greatly by getting lessons from the Mississippi delta artists like Mississippi John Hurt, Mance Lipscomb, Fred McDowell and Taj Mahal as well as any others. In '67 I moved to the Bay Area and met Country Joe McDonald and moved into is flat in Berkeley for two years. I met almost every Bay area band and did "guest spots" with Commander Cody, Hot Tuna and Asleep at the Wheel.
