Mostly self-taught, but still growing as a violist 18 years later and loving my musical life: I'm in two orchestras, principal violist in one of them, and just starting to tackle the great pillars of the solo repertoire. It's never too late to aim high!
My bridge collapsed in literally the first ten seconds of a concert, with a crack that was loud enough to stop the orchestra playing! The orchestra started the piece over while I beat a hasty retreat to backstage. Fortunately, another member of the orchestra knew a luthier who lived only a few minutes away, and I was able to get my bridge replaced and my instrument set up to play again before the end of the intermission! I was back in my seat to play the second half of the concert.
I play a viola a few years older than I am, made in 1979 by Henry Krug of Phoenix, Arizona. It's a small-ish viola (15.75") with a much bigger sound.
My primary bow is a C.F. Iesta hybrid bow with a carbon fiber core wrapped in a heavy pernambuco sheath.
I am currently using Dominant C, G, and D strings and a Larsen A string.
